Professional Perceptions of First-Year Nursing Students: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Objective: This study was conducted in order to determine the professional perceptions of first-year nursing students. Methods: Qualitative in determining occupational perceptions; phenomenological method was used. The sample of the study consisted of 15 freshman nursing students who agreed to participate in the study in the spring semester of the 2022-2023. Data collection, “Student Introduction Form” and “Semi-Structured Interview Form” were used to determine the perception of profession; content analysis by researchers, and trends on the subject were determined. Results: The mean age of the student 18.8% and 66% of them were women. The majority of the students live family consisting of mother, father and child (80%) and in the Black Sea region (33.3%). By analyzing the data, four main themes were obtained; personal profession perception, social profession perception, the future of the nursing profession, the development of the profession. It was determined that the students mostly chose the nursing profession "with the desire to help people". Conclusion: The findings of nursing students mostly care for people, there are many job opportunities, and the future of the profession will be affected by technological developments. In addition, they advocated that there should be laws and laws for developments in the field of nursing, new studies should be carried out, and digital nursing practices should be disseminated by branching in the profession. These results show that there are positive perceptions towards the nursing profession and the results are very important for the development of the nursing profession.

Amaç: Bu çalışma, hemşirelik birinci sınıf öğrencilerinin mesleki algılarını belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışmada nitel; fenomenolojik yöntem kullanılmıştır. Örneklemi 2022-2023 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar döneminde birinci sınıfta öğrenim gören 15 hemşirelik öğrencisi oluşturmuştur. Veriler, “Öğrenci Tanıtım Formu” ve meslek algısını belirlemek için "Yarı Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu" ile toplanmış, araştırmacılar tarafından betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi yöntemiyle konu ile ilgili temalar belirlenmiştir. Bulgular: Öğrencilerin yaş ortalaması 18,8 olup, %66,7’si kadındır. Öğrencilerin çoğunluğu çekirdek ailede (%80) ve Karadeniz bölgesinde (%33,3) yaşamaktadır. Verilerin analiz edilmesiyle 4 ana tema elde edilmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda ortaya çıkan ana temalar; kişisel meslek algısı, toplumsal meslek algısı, hemşirelik mesleğinin geleceği, mesleğin gelişimi şeklinde olmuştur. Öğrencilerin en çok “insanlara yardım etme isteği nedeniyle” hemşirelik mesleğini seçtiği belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Öğrenciler hemşireliği çoğunlukla iş imkânı çok olan ve insanlara bakım sağlayan bir meslek olarak tanımlamış, teknolojik gelişmeler ile mesleğin geleceğinin etkileneceğini belirtmiştir. Öğrenciler ayrıca hemşirelik alanındaki gelişmeler için yasa ve kanunların olmasını, yeni çalışmaların yapılmasını ve meslekte branşlaşma ile dijital hemşirelik uygulamalarının yaygınlaştırılması gerektiğini savunmuşlardır. Bu sonuçlar hemşirelik mesleğine yönelik olumlu algıların oluştuğunu göstermektedir ve sonuçlar hemşirelik mesleğinin gelişimi için oldukça önemlidir.
