Searching the Future of Cities in the Experience of the Past with Pattern Language Analysis

Abstract

Technological developments and population growth have led to an increase in urbanization, making it more difficult to protect the identity, cultural values and original textures of cities. By following the traces of the past, it becomes important to preserve the original structure of cities and carry them to the future. The aim of this study is to examine the settlement systems, old urban texture, road layouts, neighborhood culture, street structure and lifestyles of historical city centers and to offer suggestions for the building islands to be created in new development areas to produce textures in accordance with the identity of the city. In this context, first of all, the general characteristics and historical structure of Antalya/Elmalı District and Elmalı Urban Site Area, which is the sample area in the study, were examined, and the morphological characteristics of the historical city center were examined using C. Alexander's Pattern Language Analysis method through 21 criteria of the analysis. According to the data obtained from the analysis; the old urban texture was examined and the necessity of considering the construction approaches and planning practices of the new settlement areas with reference to the past of the city was revealed. As a result, new settlement areas in Elmalı district should be designed and planned by taking into account the building conditions specific to Elmalı and the sustainability of the traditional texture. This approach emphasizes the importance of using past values and features for a better future and living conditions. In the design of new settlement areas, architectural and planning principles appropriate to the character of Elmalı should be adopted. In this way, a sustainable urban development can be achieved by preserving the heritage of the past and a better living environment can be created for Elmalı district.

Teknolojik gelişmeler ve nüfus artışı, kentlerde yapılaşmanın artmasına dolayısıyla kentlerin kimliğinin, kültürel değerlerinin ve özgün dokularının korunması zorlaşmaktadır. Geçmişin izlerini takip ederek, kentlerin özgün yapısını korumak ve geleceğe taşımak önemli hale gelmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı; tarihi kent merkezlerinin yerleşim sistemleri, eski kent dokusu, yol düzenleri, mahalle kültürü, sokak yapısı ve yaşam tarzlarını inceleyerek yeni gelişim alanlarında oluşturulacak yapı adalarının kentin kimliğine uygun şekilde dokular üretmesine yönelik öneriler sunmaktır. Bu bağlamda, çalışmada öncelikle örneklem alanı olan Antalya/Elmalı İlçesi ve Elmalı Kentsel Sit Alanı genel özellikleri ve tarihi yapısı incelenmiş, tarihi kent merkezinin morfolojik Özellikleri C. Alexander’ın Örüntü Dili Analizi (Pattern Language Analizi) yöntemi kullanılarak analizin 21 kriteri üzerinden incelenmiştir. Analizden elde edilen verilere göre; eski kent dokusu incelenerek elde edilen verilerle yeni yerleşim alanlarının yapılaşma yaklaşımları ve planlama uygulamalarının kentin geçmişi referans alınarak ele alınması gerekliliği ortaya konulmuştur. Sonuç olarak, Elmalı ilçesinde yeni yerleşim alanları, Elmalı'ya özgü yapılaşma koşullarını ve geleneksel dokunun sürdürülebilirliğini dikkate alarak tasarlanmalı ve planlanmalıdır. Bu yaklaşım, geçmiş değerlerin ve özelliklerin kullanılmasının daha iyi bir gelecek ve yaşam koşulları için önemini vurgulamaktadır. Yeni yerleşim alanlarının tasarımında, Elmalı'nın karakterine uygun mimari ve planlama ilkelerinin benimsenmesi gerekmektedir. Bu sayede, geçmişin mirası korunarak sürdürülebilir bir kentsel gelişme sağlanabilecek ve Elmalı ilçesi için daha iyi bir yaşam ortamı oluşturulabilecektir.
