Reliability and Validity Study of The Elementary School Motivation Scale’s Turkish Form

Abstract

The aim of this study is to make validity and reliability studies by adapting the The Elementary School Motivation Scale to Turkish to determine the internal, external and identified external motivations of elementary school students in basic acedemic skills such as reading, writing and mathematics. The participants of the study were 229 primary school students in the second, third and fourth grades of two different primary schools in a city center in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. The translation process of the scale into Turkish was conducted according to the translation process of Brislin (1970). The data were analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 and LISREL 8.80 programs for construct validity using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA); criterion-related validity was examined with the Scale of Motivation in Education. In the results of the research, it was seen that the factor load values of the scale were medium and high, t values were significant and error variances were within the expected value ranges. As a result of the CFA analysis, it was seen that the scale produced adequate fit values. The reliability of the instrument was calculated with Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient and it was found that the three basic skills and three sub-dimensions in each skill had sufficient reliability coefficients. As a result, it can be said that the Turkish form of Elementary School Students Motivation Scale can be used as a valid and reliable measurement tool. Using this scale, it is suggested to carry out studies on the relationship between motivation of students with different variables.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, ilkokul öğrencilerinin okuma, yazma ve matematik gibi temel beceri alanlarında içsel, dışsal ve özdeşleşmiş dışsal motivasyonlarının belirlenmesine yönelik geliştirilen İlkokul Öğrencileri Motivasyon Ölçeğinin Türkiye örnekleminde geçerlik ve güvenirliğinin incelenmesidir. Çalışmadaki katılımcılar, Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesinde yer alan bir il merkezindeki 2 farklı ilkokulun 2, 3 ve 4. sınıflarında öğrenim gören 229 ilkokul öğrencisidir. Ölçeğin Türkçeye çeviri süreci Brislin’in (1970) çeviri işlemlerine göre yürütülmüştür. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 22.0 ve LISREL 8.80 programları kullanılarak Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizleri (DFA) ile yapı geçerliği; Eğitimde Motivasyon Ölçeği kullanılarak ölçüt bağıntılı geçerliği incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonuçlarında, ölçeğin faktör yük değerlerinin orta ve yüksek düzeyde, t değerlerinin anlamlı ve hata varyanslarının da beklenen değer aralıklarında olduğu görülmüştür. DFA analizleri sonucunda ölçeğin yeterli uyum değerleri ürettiği görülmüştür. Ölçme aracının güvenirliği Cronbach alfa iç tutarlık katsayısı ile hesaplanmış ve temel üç beceri ve her becerideki üçer alt boyutun yeterli güvenirlik katsayılarına sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak, İlkokul Öğrencileri Motivasyon Ölçeği Türkçe formunun geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olarak kullanılabileceği söylenebilir. Bu ölçek kullanılarak temel okul becerilerinden okuma, yazma ve matematikte öğrencilerin motivasyonlarının farklı değişkenlerle ilişkisinin inceleneceği çalışmaların gerçekleştirilmesi önerilmektedir.
