The Adaptation of Short Form of Social Anxiety Scale and Examination its Psychometric Properties

Abstract

Social anxiety distracts the individual from social environments and socialization. Although social anxiety is common in every stage of life, it usually starts in adolescence. This study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the Short Form of Social Anxiety Scale developed for high school students and adults by adapting it to Turkish language. The data of the study were collected from two different samples of students studying at a state university. Scale adaptation steps were followed in the study. SPSS 22 package program and LISREL 8.8 program were used for data analysis. Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis were used for the construct validity of the scale, and Cronbach's alpha and McDonald coefficients, which were used to calculate the internal consistency, were examined in order to determine its reliability. As a result of the Confirmatory Factor Analysis, it was seen that the standardized factor loads of the scale items took values between .61 and .94 and all t values were significant. In addition, it was understood that the fit index values of the model obtained were acceptable and excellent values. As a result of the Exploratory Factor Analysis performed by collecting data from a different sample, it was determined that the three-dimensional structure of the scale was confirmed and the items were collected in the relevant sub-factors. In the findings of the reliability analysis, the reliability coefficients for the sub-dimensions and general of the scale were .78 and above, indicating that the scale can be used as a reliable measurement tool. As a result, it is suggested that the measurement tool can be used to determine the social anxiety of high school students and adults in the Turkish sample.

Sosyal kaygı, bireyi sosyal ortamlardan ve sosyalleşmeden uzaklaştırmaktadır. Sosyal kaygı yaygın görülmekle birlikte genellikle ergenlik dönemlerinde başlangıç göstermektedir. Bu çalışma da lise öğrencileri ve yetişkinler için geliştirilen Sosyal Kaygı Ölçeği Kısa Formu’nun uyarlanarak psikometrik özelliklerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmanın verileri bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerden iki farklı örneklemden toplanmıştır. Araştırmada ölçek uyarlama adımları izlenmiştir. Verilerin analizi için SPSS 22 paket programı ile LISREL 8.8 programı kullanılmıştır. Ölçeğin yapı geçerliği için Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi ve Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi, güvenirliğinin belirlenmesi amacıyla iç tutarlığının hesaplanmasında kullanılan Cronbach alfa ve McDonald katsayıları incelenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgularda, Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi sonucunda ölçek maddelerinin standardize edilmiş faktör yüklerinin .61 ile .94 arasında değişen aralıklarda değerler aldığı ve tüm t değerlerinin anlamlı olduğu görülmüştür. Ayrıca elde edilen modelin uyum indeksi değerlerinin kabul edilebilir ve mükemmel değerlere sahip olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Farklı bir örneklemden veri toplanarak gerçekleştirilen Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi sonucunda ölçeğin üç boyutlu yapısının doğrulandığı ve maddelerin ilgili alt faktörlerde toplandığı belirlenmiştir. Güvenirlik analizi bulgularında ölçeğin alt boyutları ve geneli için güvenirlik katsayılarının .78 ve üzerinde değerler alması ölçeğin güvenilir bir ölçme aracı olarak kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak ölçme aracının Türkiye örnekleminde lise öğrencileri ve yetişkinlerin sosyal kaygılarını belirlemek amacıyla kullanılabileceği önerilmektedir.
