THE PLACES THAT THE NAMES WERE CHANGED AND THEIR NEW NAMES IN THE 20TH CENTURY AT CANİK FLAG

Abstract

The name of the places is an important document that reflect the culture and the country of thepeoplewholivethere. Therefore, the Turkish peoplesettled in differentparts of the world and named those place sthat they ruled for a period of time related to their culture.    Such a case continued during the Ottoman period. As the Ottomans were multinational State, eachnationor groups named their ownplaces with the names related to their culture. After the idea that appeared with the French Revolution, the state put some regulations and laws to provide thesecurityandtheunity of thestate. One of these ideas was Turkish nationalism. The first application wasthechanging of thenames of the placesall over the country. The application that started at that time was applied by changing the name of Canik (Samsun) sanjak. 

Yer adları, o topraklar üzerinde yaşayanların, vatanı olduğunu ve kültürel özelliklerini yansıtan önemli bir belgedir. Dolayısıyla dünyanın değişik coğrafyalarını yurt edinen Türkler, hâkim oldukları topraklara kendi kültürlerinin özelliklerini gösteren yer adlarını vermişlerdir.   Bu durum, Osmanlı Devleti döneminde de sürdürüldü. Fakat Osmanlı, çok milletli bir devlet olmasından, her milletin kendi yaşadığı bölgeye, kendi dilinde yer adı vermesini ortaya çıkardı. Fransız ihtilalinin yaydığı milliyetçilik düşüncesi sonrasında ise devlet birlik ve düzeni sağlamaya yönelik bazı fikir akımları uygulamaya koydu. Bu akımlardan birsi de, Türkçülük fikri oldu. Bu düşünce istikametinde yabancı yer adlarının değiştirilmesine gidildi. Bu başlatılan değişiklik hareketi Canik (Samsun) sancağında da uygulandı.
