Social Studies and Natural Disasters

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine how the subject of natural disasters is reflected in the social studies curriculum and textbooks and to offer concrete solutions for any deficiencies. In order to achieve this aim, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade social studies textbooks and the curriculum were examined. As the study group in the research, one textbook at each grade level belonging to two different publishers was examined in March-April in the spring semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. The findings obtained in the research, which utilized the document analysis technique, were analyzed with the document analysis technique. According to the findings obtained, it was determined that the curriculum was sufficient for the subject of natural disasters and the textbooks were prepared in accordance with the program in terms of achievements, skills and values. In addition, although natural disasters are included in the textbooks at every grade level, with earthquakes being the most common, it was found that this situation was more limited in grades 6 and 7. As a result of all these, although the program and textbooks have sufficient content, it is important to eliminate some deficiencies by making updates.

Bu araştırmanın amacı doğal afetler konusunun sosyal bilgiler öğretim programına ve ders kitaplarına nasıl yansıdığını tespit ederek varsa eksiklikler konusunda somut çözüm önerileri sunmaktır. Bu amacı gerçekleştirmek için okullarda okutulmakta olan 4, 5, 6 ve 7. sınıf sosyal bilgiler ders kitapları ve uygulanan öğretim programı incelenmiştir. Araştırmada çalışma grubu olarak iki farklı yayınevine ait her sınıf seviyesinde birer ders kitabı 2022-2023 eğitim öğretim yılı bahar döneminde Mart-Nisan ayları içerisinde incelenmiştir. Doküman incelemesi tekniğinden faydalanılan araştırma da elde edilen bulgular doküman analizi tekniğiyle çözümlenmiştir. Elde edilen bulgulara göre doğal afetler konusu özelinde öğretim programının yeterli olduğu, ders kitaplarının da kazanım, beceri ve değerler açısından programa uygun şekilde hazırlandığı tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca ders kitaplarında en fazla deprem olmak kaydıyla doğal afetlere her sınıf düzeyinde yer verilse de 6 ve 7. sınıflarda bu durumun daha sınırlı olduğu ulaşılmıştır. Tüm bunların neticesinde program ve ders kitapları yeterli içeriğe sahip olsalar da ve güncellemelerin yapılarak bazı eksikliklerin giderilmesi önem arz etmektedir.
