“Properties of Matter” Unit: Success Test Development and Determining Student Success

The aim of this study is to develop an achievement test considering the steps of the Renewed Bloom Taxonomy, which will contribute to the measurement of the achievements of the fourth grade “Properties of Matter” unit in the “2018 Science Curriculum” and to examine the student success in the pandemic period in terms of some variables. During the development of the test, a specification table was prepared for 10 achievements of the unit, and then 20 multiple-choice questions were prepared in accordance with the levels of the objectives in the specification table in the Revised Bloom Taxonomy. The content validity of the prepared questions was ensured by the examination of an academician, 3 science education experts and a language expert. The pilot application of the achievement test with content validity was applied to 9 students at different developmental levels identified by science teacher in a state secondary school affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, and the intelligibility of the items and the use of time were tested. The achievement test, the pilot of which was completed, was administered to 227 students in two secondary schools with different socioeconomic levels. With the analysis made at the end of the application, the difficulty index of the items was 0.55 (moderate), the “discrimination index” was 0.55 (very good), and the “Kuder Richardson (KR-20)” value was found to be (0.78). When the discrimination values of the items are examined one by one, there is no item removed from the test because there is no item at a low level. As a result of the study, it was concluded that there was no significant difference between male and female students according to the findings related to the gender variable; regarding the socioeconomic level variable, there was a significant difference in favor of the school with a high socioeconomic level. With this study, an achievement test that can be used by both teachers and researchers, whose validity and reliability has been ensured in accordance with the Revised Bloom Taxonomy for the “Properties of Matter” unit at primary school level, has been brought to the literature. © 2023,Milli Egitim.All Rights Reserved.
