Objective: Ozone therapy (OT) is known to eliminate pathogens in the periodontal pocket and accelerate wound healing. This study aimed to investigate the clinical and biochemical efficacy of OT as adjunctive scaling and root planning (SRP) in the treatment of periodontitis.Materials and Methods: Fifty systemically healthy individuals with periodontitis were included in this study. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were taken from the patients before and 8 weeks after starting the treatment, and gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), pocket depth (PD), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were obtained from all subjects. Non-surgical periodontal treatment was applied to the test and control groups, and gaseous ozone treatment was applied in addition to the test group. TNF-& alpha;, IL-1f3, IL-6, IL-10, and MMP-9 values in GCF samples before and after treatment were determined by the ELISA method and evaluated statistically. Results: Both groups presented significantly decreased clinical periodontal parameters at 8-week from baseline (p<0.05). Clinical periodontal parameters were found to be significantly lower in the test group than In the control group, there was a decrease in TNF-& alpha; levels after non-surgical periodontal treatment (p<0.05). Both groups demonstrated significantly decreased IL-1f3, IL-6, IL-10, and MMP-9 levels at 8-week (p<0.05). The test group showed a significant decrease in MMP-9 levels compared with the control group at 8-week (p<0.05).Conclusion: As a result of the close relationship observed between clinical periodontal measurements and biochemical parameters, it was observed that clinical periodontal healing affects biochemical parameters, and in addition to non-surgical periodontal treatment, ozone treatment improves clinical periodontal measurements and affects biochemical parameters by reducing the GCF volume.en_US
