Abstract

Purpose Although a wide variety of methods have been described, there is no defined gold standard treatment for mandibular angle fractures. This study aims to evaluate the stability and load values of a single miniplate used in different locations in mandibular angle fractures by using the Finite Elements Analysis (FEA). Methods The mandibular geometry was obtained from computerized tomography images. A mandibular angle fracture was created by using the SOLIDWORKS program. The analysis was performed by using the FEA method. The miniplate placement was implemented on the inferior, middle, and superior sides of the mandible that it was vertically positioned to the fracture line and parallel to the mandibular contours. Vertical power with 200 N was applied from the 1st molar region after fixation of the fracture. The tension occurred in the miniplate, screws, and bone segments, and the stabilization of the fracture line was evaluated. Results The miniplate placed vertically to the fracture line on superior provided less tension on screws, miniplate, and mandible segments during loading. Also, on the miniplate placed parallel to the mandibular contour, less tension on the screw, miniplate, and mandible segments were seen on the superior side. The minimum displacement was provided by the miniplate, which was placed vertically in the middle. Conclusion Our study predicted that the best stability was provided in the miniplate placed vertically to the fracture line in the middle, minimum VMS values were achieved on the miniplate placed superior and parallel to the contour of the mandible.
