2-Chloro-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridine has been characterized by FT-IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR experiment. FT-IR spectra of the molecule has been recorded in the 4000-400 cm(-1) region. The molecular structural parameters and vibrational frequencies were computed using the HF and DFT (B3LYP, B3PW91) methods with the 6-31+G(d,p) and 6-311++G(d,p) basis sets. H-1 and C-13 NMR Gauge Including Atomic Orbital (GIAO) chemical shifts of the compound were calculated using the density functional method (B3LYP) with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The vibrational wavenumbers and chemical shifts were compared with the experimental data of the compound. Using the TD-DFT methodology, electronic absorption spectra of the compound have been computed. Besides, solvent effects on the excitation energies and chemical shifts were carried out using the integral equation formalism of the polarisable continuum model (IEF-PCM). DFT calculations of the compound, Mulliken's charges, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), natural bond orbital (NBO) and thermodynamic properties were also obtained theoretically. In addition, the antimicrobial activities were tested by using minimal inhibitory concentration method (MIC) and also the effect of the molecule on pBR322 plasmid DNA was monitored byagarose gel electrophoresis experiments.
